Microdermabrasion vs. Dermaplaning: Which is Right for You?

Exfoliation is great for the skin, especially on our faces. It leaves skin looking brighter, prevents breakouts by unclogging pores, and increases skincare products’ efficacy by boosting absorption. Cultivating a long-term exfoliation routine will increase collagen production, which creates glowing, youthful skin and fights off sagging and wrinkles.

Microdermabrasion (MDA) and dermaplaning (DP) are two different skin exfoliating processes. While both offer the benefits of exfoliation, they each have their own additional benefits and are better suited for particular people. Exfoliation is important, but which procedure is right for you? Let’s compare MDA and DP and explore their advantages, so you can determine which is right for you.

What is Microdermabrasion?

This treatment was first developed in Europe in the 1980s. Since that time, it has increased in popularity, and it is now known as one of the top non-surgical methods to refresh and restore facial skin. We offer diamond MDA.

Diamond MDA: This is the most common choice. It involves using a vacuum suction wand encrusted in diamonds, the aesthetician gently eliminates the top layers of dead and dull skin. The quality and intensity of the treatment depends on the aesthetician maintaining a certain level of pressure to exfoliate the skin effectively.

If your skin feels drab or lackluster, MDA can have some truly excellent after-effects, such as:

  • Smooth skin
  • Brighter complexion
  • Collagen production
  • Softer fine lines and wrinkles
  • Reduced acne scars
  • Reduced hyperpigmentation
  • Smaller pores

Generally, a minimum of five sessions is needed to see the best results. Both treatments are painless but require about a week of recovery time for the skin to heal. Once the skin has healed, you can use makeup. Your face can retain a pinkish color for up to eight weeks, and your normal skin color will slowly return over that time.

Who Is It For?

MDA is recommended for patients with non-sensitive skin. Although the procedure can be quite valuable, it’s hard on sensitive skin. If you have a skin condition that causes redness like rosacea, or simply sensitive skin that reddens easily, MDA is too aggressive for your skin type. It could even make existing skin problems worse.

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning has been around in the USA since the 1970's. Its original use was described as a possible remedy for acne vulgaris – a type of acne caused by an excess of dead facial skin, facial bacteria, and facial oils, causing pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, and cysts.

DP exfoliation requires the aesthetician to manually scrape built-up dead skin cells off your face with a sharp surgical blade. As dead skin is scraped away, so is vellus hair or “peach fuzz.” This is beneficial because these tiny hairs harbor dirt and oil, which cause breakouts and a diminished complexion.

If your skin is looking dull and you have a lot of acne (cystic or otherwise), DP is a gentle way to exfoliate your skin and reap some amazing benefits, including:

  • Smoother, more radiant skin
  • Softer fine lines and wrinkles
  • Reduced scarring
  • Removal of vellus hair (it won’t grow back darker or thicker)

DP can show great results after one session, and there is no recovery time. It’s easy, painless, and won’t leave your skin red for an extended period of time. It's a fact that many famous actors, singers, and performers prefer DP because it requires no recovery time.

DP is suited for all skin types, even patients whose skin is sensitive or retains redness. It will be most effective on aging, acne-scarred, and dry skin types..

How to decide between Microdermabrasion and Dermaplaning

Deciding between MDA and DP can be difficult, especially if you have a normal skin type that makes you well suited for either. If you have any big events coming up for which you don’t want your skin to be red and in the process of healing, DP is probably the better option. If you have sensitive skin, recently got a chemical peel or a more invasive facial treatment, or are pregnant or nursing, DP is the better option again.

A common patient question is, “Can you dermaplane after microdermabrasion?” The answer is no, not until your skin has healed from MDA. However, the aesthetician may recommend DP combined with MDA. In this case, because it is less aggressive, DP must be done first, and MDA can follow. Either can be done in combination to an chemical peel, improving the effects of the peel.

As you weigh the benefits of each procedure, remember that there is no right choice for everyone. The best option for you depends on your specific skin concerns and needs. Both exfoliating procedures have the potential to benefit your skin immensely, but if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or have sensitive skin, MDA isn’t for you. If you’re currently suffering from an acne outbreak, DP will have to wait until your breakout subsides. For the ultimate skin exfoliation experience, ask our aesthetician about combining services.

If you aren’t sure of your skin type and need assistance deciding which treatment is right, book an in-depth skin consultation session and get an in-depth skin analysis with ImagePro® SUNLITE.

Lumecca IPL Skin Rejuvenation

Lumecca treats vascular and pigmented lesions to help reduce the look of aging throughout your entire body including the face, neck & décolletage (neck & upper chest areas), the hands, the arms, legs, and anywhere else that you might notice sun or age spots. NOT FOR MELASMA TREATMENT. NOT FOR FITZPATRICK SKIN TYPES V-VI.

The procedure itself is very simple and painless. During the treatment session, your practitioner will use a handheld device to produce a flash of light and mild vibrations to the areas being treated on the skin. Since Lumecca, which uses photothermolysis, is the strongest IPL treatment currently available, most procedures can be done in just a few short sessions (3-4 sessions recommended).

It is best to schedule a consultation first (if possible but not required) in order to better prepare for this treatment. We highly recommend a specific skin care routine in advance to ready your skin for treatment and best outcomes. Must be 3 weeks without direct sun exposure, otherwise we cannot proceed with treatment.

Laser Hair Removal

DiolazeXL is an advanced laser hair removal procedure that safely and gently eliminates unwanted hair. DiolazeXL has one of the largest treatment spot sizes, making treatments convenient and fast. The combination of efficacy, patient comfort and speed makes DiolazeXL a leader in laser hair removal. It is powerful enough to target and treat even the most stubborn hair.

Approved by Health Canada, each session takes about 20-30 minutes rather than a standard 40 minutes session with a traditional laser. Along with the shorter sessions, patients will also enjoy results quicker, thanks to the highly effective gold standard wavelength.

Lashes & Brows - from lamination & tinting to gorgeous extensions

Enjoy longer, beautiful lashes with eyelash extensions. Jessie provides a full application along with follow up fills.

Lash Lift & Tint: This treatment is used to tint, lift and curl each individual lash, giving you a more fuller effect as lashes appear longer and more voluminous.

Brow tint and lamination is similar to a lash lift, as it lifts your brow hairs to make them look fuller and helps with getting unruly brow hairs in place. Brow lamination fills gaps and gives the illusion that you have thick, luscious brows without using invasive techniques.

We customize each treatment to ensure the colour for the tint matches your preference and natural colour.

Chemical Peels - The Science Behind Them

Additional Information

What is a chemical peel?

Chemical peels cause intentional damage to the epidermis and/or dermis with the goal of stimulating new tissue to improve skin texture and tone.

Peels have been used dating back to Ancient Egypt. Cleopatra used sour milk to improve the appearance of her skin, according to some sources. Lactic acid (an alpha hydroxy acid) is the active ingredient in sour milk.

How can chemical peels benefit the skin?

Chemical peels improve skin texture and firmness, decreasing fine lines and wrinkles. Peels also even out skin tone, improve acne-prone skin and reduce pore size appearance.

How are peels classified?

Chemical peels are classified as superficial, medium or deep, depending on the depth of penetration of the ingredients used. Superficial peels exfoliate to various levels of the epidermis. Medium-depth peels treat through the papillary dermis and deep peels to the mid-reticular dermis.

The strength of a chemical peel is determined by the type of ingredients used, their concentrations and the pH of the formulation.

How do superficial chemical peels work?

Superficial peels decrease the pH, which loosens the connections between dead skin cells, inducing exfoliation and stimulating new cell growth. This process causes superficial layers of dead skin to peel off, revealing a smoother and more radiant complexion.  Peels can also thicken the epidermis, increase dermal volume and stimulate collagen.

Superficial peels rarely cause side effects. However, hyperpigmentation can still occur with darker skin types.

How do medium and deep chemical peels work?

Medium and deep peels cause protein coagulation and cell necrosis (cell death) in the epidermis and dermis. This induces inflammation and the wound-healing cascade, which leads to dermal regeneration including collagen stimulation. Since medium and deep peels treat through to the dermis, re-epithelialization starts from the epidermal lining of hair follicles outwards.

Medium and deep peels require more downtime and carry with them a higher chance of side effects including hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, infection and scars.

On what areas of the body are chemical peels used?

Chemical peels are usually performed on the face, but may also be used on the neck, décolleté, back and hands.

What are common peeling agents?

Some common peeling ingredients include alpha hydroxy acids (AHA), beta hydroxy acids (BHA), trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and retinol. Alpha hydroxy acids include glycolic acid (originally from sugar cane), lactic acid (originally from milk), malic acid (originally from apples and pears), tartaric acid (originally from grapes) and mandelic acid (originally from bitter almonds). Salicylic acid (related to aspirin) is the only beta hydroxy acid.

Not all peels are created equal, and one peel type doesn’t suit all. Certain ingredients may be more effective for treating acne, while others may be more successful in treating hyperpigmentation or the signs of aging.

What is the difference between an AHA and a BHA (salicylic acid) peels?

AHA peels work by reducing sulfate and phosphate groups from the surface of corneocytes to decrease corneocyte cohesion leading to exfoliation of epidermal cells. Salicylic acid peels are lipid soluble allowing deeper penetration into the follicle. As well as exfoliating, salicylic acid works as both a keratolytic and comedolytic agent by causing cells of the epidermis and in the follicle to shed, clearing the pores and allowing room for new cell growth. In addition, salicylic acid has anti-inflammatory properties and is able to neutralize bacteria at low percentages. These properties make salicylic acid ideal for acne.

What is an enzyme peel?
Like a chemical peel, an enzyme peel is also a treatment used to improve skin texture and appearance. Enzymes are applied to the skin, which loosen the connections between dead skin cells, inducing exfoliation and stimulating new cell growth. This process causes superficial layers of dead skin to peel off, revealing a smoother and more radiant complexion. Enzyme peels both nourish and exfoliate the skin and are usually made with fruit enzymes. The most popular fruit enzymes are papain, found in papayas, and bromelain, found in pineapple.

What is AlumierMD’s peel philosophy?

We offer a selection of superficial to medium depth peels known for their excellent results and safety profile. We believe in repeated treatments for progressive and gradual results, and to avoid the side effects and downtime associated with deeper peels.  Chemical peels should be performed by a trained skin care professional in a clinical setting so that they are delivered safely and effectively.

When peels are performed regularly, the skin gets used to this process and begins to rejuvenate itself like younger skin. To be sure that the body doesn’t react to this deep exfoliation as it would to trauma, which can lead to pigment changes, exfoliation must be introduced gradually giving the skin time to adjust.

Your skin care specialist will complete a thorough skin analysis and recommend an individualized treatment program to address your skin concerns.  She will create a personalized program that combines professional treatments with home care products since they work synergistically to improve the health and beauty of skin. Pre-treatment products precondition the skin, accelerate results and minimize complications. Post-treatment products minimize complications, soothe the skin and then maintain the results.  Professional treatments enhance the results of your home care products.

Why should beneficial ingredients be applied post-peel and not within the peel solution?

Most beneficial ingredients for the skin tend to degrade or denature when placed in the low pH of chemical peel formulas. With that scientific information in mind, AlumierMD peels use only the pure acids; anti-aging, antioxidant and brightening booster ingredients are applied post-peel in our Brightening Accelerator keeping all components effective.

Peels remove the outer dead layers of the stratum corneum, so the booster ingredients are better absorbed when applied post-peel. Our multilayer process can be customized by your skin care professional according to your skin profile and concerns.

Treatment expectations

Beautiful skin doesn’t happen overnight. A single chemical peel can provide the immediate effect of bright and radiant skin. However, more significant results in treating textural issues, fine lines and inflamed acne take time and require regular treatments, and often combination treatments.
